The Eiffel tower was built in 1887-89 as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle, a World’s Fair marking the centennial celebration of the French Revolution. By then it was the tallest building in the world. Today a true icon of Paris, at that time it has caused heated debates and a strong public opposition. Guy de Maupassant, for instance, frequented the restaurant at the foot of the tower for this was the only place in Paris where he could "avoid seeing its otherwise unavoidable profile".
Gustav Eiffel has designed an extremely elegant and light structure. Its mass is less than the mass of the air contained in a cylinder of the same dimensions; if resized to a height of 30 cm, the tower will weight only 7 grammes.
