When you enter the Galeries Lafayette for the first time, it seems just yet another trendy department store. But wait to judge until you find yourself under its breathtakingly beautiful, burning with colours and ornaments cupola that frames the fragrant world of their perfume department.
The first store of the firm, situated on the corner of rue La Fayette, was opened in 1893. The interior of the present building – its glass and steel cupola and Art Nouveau staircases – was created in 1912. Today this splendid monument of the Belle Époque is the biggest department store in Paris, offering the latest and chicest of what’s à la mode.
