The bridge Alexandre III is one of the most beautiful and certainly most sumptuously decorated bridge in the city. It was designed by architects Résal and Alby and built by as part of series of projects within the preparation for the Universal Exposition in 1900. As the exposition took place on both sides of the Seine, the new bridge was thought to facilitate intense public circulation.
Foundation stone of the bridge was laid by the Russian Tsar Nikolay II in October 1896. The bridge was named after his father, Alexander III and was built to symbolise friendship between France and Russia.
Bridge’s lanterns are identical to those illuminating the Troicky bridge that spans over the cool waters of Neva River in Sankt-Petersburg.
