The Musée d'Orsay is housed in the former railway station, the Gare d'Orsay. It was built for the Exposition Universelle of 1900 and served as a terminal station for trains coming from the southwestern France until 1939.
Today the Museum holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1915, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography, and is probably best known for its extensive collection of impressionist masterpieces by Monet, Degas, Renoir, and Cezanne.
Sculpture “Young elephant caught in a trap” was made by the French sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet for the Exposition Universelle of 1878.
