The famous Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle is situated within the garden. It is made up of four galleries: the Grande Galerie de l'Évolution, the Mineralogy Museum, the Paleontology Museum and the Entomology Museum. In addition to the gardens there is also an aquarium and a small zoo, founded in 1795 by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre from animals of the royal menagerie at Versailles.
The School of Botany trains botanists, constructs demonstration gardens, and exchanges seeds to maintain biotic diversity, having over 10,000 plant species in their collection.
It is also a place of work and study for students of the nearby University Paris VII (Jussieu).
