Since 1768 kilomètre zéro on the Plaza of Notre Dame marks the point from which all distances in France are measured. Brass star marking the place shines brightly for so many tourists have polished it with their feet while being photographed here „for good luck”.
Until the 19th century this place was entangled by a network of medieval streets and tightly built houses. The feeling of free air came here when baron Haussmann has demolished the block and designed a plaza instead.
Archaeological excavations in 1965 revealed the remains of Gallo-Roman ramparts, 3rd century rooms heated by an underground furnace system, and cellars of medieval houses. This heritage became the basis of a historic museum – the Archaeological Crypt of the Parvis of Notre-Dame, located under the plaza.
